What are the main alternatives to Stripe for international payments?
There are several alternatives, but they do not replace the same part of Stripe. PayPal can add a consumer wallet. Adyen or Checkout.com can provide global acquiring and local methods. Braintree combines gateway and merchant-service capabilities in supported markets. A Merchant of Record such as Paddle can take on payment, billing, and indirect-tax responsibilities for eligible digital products. Choose the payment role, operating entity, target market, and responsibility boundary before choosing a brand.
“Replace Stripe” may mean replacing card acquiring, adding a preferred wallet, improving local approval rates, handling subscription billing, supporting marketplace payouts, or delegating sales-tax administration. If the gap is not defined, a new integration can still leave the merchant ineligible, liable for tax, or unable to offer the method customers use.
| Category | Typical role | Merchant retains | Verify before selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer wallet, such as PayPal | Wallet balance/account plus card entry | Fulfilment, dispute evidence, account compliance, tax | Country availability, buyer preference, rate, payout |
| Acquirer/payment platform, such as Adyen or Checkout.com | Cards, local methods, risk, unified transactions | Merchant identity, tax, refund/dispute, business compliance | Entity eligibility, MCC, currencies, local acquiring |
| Gateway and merchant service, such as Braintree | Cards, PayPal, selected wallets in one integration | Region/account obligations and tax | Supported country, merchant account, SDK lifecycle, rate |
| Merchant of Record, such as Paddle | Eligible digital products, billing, payment, indirect-tax handling | Product delivery, income tax, data, platform terms | Product approval, refund policy, migration, customer relationship |
| Local acquirer or wallet | Better coverage in one market | Multi-provider reconciliation, treasury, local compliance | Local entity, settlement route, API and operations support |
Paddle's official digital-product explanation describes its Merchant of Record role. Its pricing page, checked August 26, 2026, lists a pay-as-you-go 5% + USD 0.50 per Checkout transaction, with custom pricing for low-value or larger-scale cases. That is not directly comparable to card processing because the responsibility bundle is wider, and product admission is not guaranteed.
Braintree's product overview describes Braintree Direct as providing a merchant account and gateway subject to application and regional availability. Adyen publishes its pricing structure, while Checkout.com describes online acceptance; enterprise terms still depend on the merchant, method, and transaction structure.

Wavesteam builds a market–entity–method matrix from target countries, currencies, order values, card origins, subscription share, refunds, and chargebacks, then obtains eligibility and written terms. Total cost includes percentage and fixed components, cross-border and conversion additions, non-returned refund fees, disputes, tax services, payout, risk tools, and engineering. Fixed fees disproportionately affect low-value products; local acquiring can affect approval more than a nominal rate when cross-border card share is high.
A pilot measures authorization, 3DS completion, checkout completion, refund time, disputes, settlement variance, reconciliation effort, and net proceeds by country and method. It includes failed and abandoned attempts, one refund, a dispute simulation where supported, and a complete settlement cycle.
A second provider can reduce technical or regional concentration, but it is not a route around underwriting, sanctions, network rules, or prohibited products. Payment intent, refund, idempotent webhook, and reconciliation can be abstracted, while routing requires business and compliance approval and a clear statement of the payee.
For eligible digital products without global indirect-tax capability, compare MoR total cost with owning tax operations. With a suitable entity and a need for local acquiring at scale, compare payment platforms. Add PayPal when target buyers prefer it rather than automatically replacing every card route. Wavesteam can evaluate and implement these options but cannot promise provider approval, permanent rates, or immunity from account review.
